About the team

The Content Platform domain is the backbone of Storytel, ingesting and processing all content from publishers to the platform, enriching it with metadata, and building systems that organize knowledge about creators and content. Close to two million audiobooks, ebooks, and podcasts flow through our processing pipeline and are made available to other teams via APIs and event streams.

The domain mission is to be a key driver for Storytel’s product and commercial strategy by making book metadata a competitive advantage for Storytel. The team leverages AI and automation to scale the creation and enhancement of book metadata, fueling product innovation and unlocking the full potential of generative AI-powered experiences.

About the role

As Director of Engineering for Content Platform, you’ll have a team of seven experienced engineers reporting to you. Your job is to lead them across various initiatives, guiding them in building and enhancing the content platform to achieve product objectives. Daily, you have a close collaboration with a Product Manager and Staff Engineer dedicated to your domain to ensure smooth operations and strategic alignment.

You’ll report to the Chief Product & Technology Officer and be part of the Product & Tech leadership team. This is a role that offers an exciting range of tasks, with a focus on fostering an environment where everyone can thrive and grow at individual, domain, and organizational levels. As a technical leader, you’re the go-to sparring partner in big and small, expected to be able to ship operationally wherever needed and lead by example.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Define and lead the technical vision for the Content Platform, ensuring it aligns with goals for scalability, availability, and performance.

• Encourage innovation and technical decision-making, evaluating new tools, frameworks, and practices to improve platform capabilities and developer experience.

• Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team, including hiring, mentoring, and developing senior engineers. Establish and maintain engineering excellence.

• Own the end-to-end delivery of the Content Platform’s services and infrastructure, ensuring high quality, reliability, and speed of execution.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, data, and content operations teams to prioritize and deliver impactful features and platform capabilities.

• Ensure effective governance and data integrity across content ingestion, metadata, localization, and distribution pipelines. Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform investments, including tech debt reduction and migration strategies.

Successful candidates also meet the following criteria:

• Engineering background, preferably as a senior software engineer, data engineer or similar.

• Experience in leading others, ideally working with distributed and remote teams.

• A fast-moving problem solver with a passion for innovation and experimentation.

• Strategic and visionary, not afraid to push the envelope and question the status quo.

• Excellent communication skills.
