About the team

Storytel’s Machine Learning team is an experienced group of six people that is part of the Experience Domain; a newly started domain with the mission to push the user experience across mobile platforms. Some key focus areas for all teams in this domain are personalized content discovery and, immersive listening experience - to name a few.

More specifically, the Machine Learning team is responsible for designing and implementing models for content recommendation, automated content curation and a broad range of applications - always with a dedication to enhancing the overall customer experience while optimizing internal operations. The focus is on scaling personalized discovery and recommendations to increase content relevance and listening diversity. Additionally, the team supports other domains with models that help understand customers along the entire customer journey.

About the role

This is a new role added to our organization to leverage the team’s operational excellence. In the past few years, we’ve been on a journey to establish our Machine Learning platform foundations while evolving key existing machine-learning assets within the product. Now it’s time for the next chapter.

This is a combined role of being a people leader and technical leader. You’ll be critical in driving Storytel’s development and management of Machine Learning products and platform components - from ideation to production. You’ll report to the Director of Engineering and have an end-to-end personalization domain backing you. In the connecting teams, you have Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers to work closely with and thanks to this being the biggest domain, you can drive real impact on the future of storytelling.

Some of the fun stuff you’ll do includes:

• Leading, mentoring, and developing a high-performing diverse team of Data Scientists and ML engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.

• Setting engineering goals for the team and adapting strategies to meet changing business requirements.

• Establishing and optimizing ways of working within the team and with stakeholders across the business, ensuring efficient day-to-day operations.

• Translating technical and business strategies into actionable plans, including product and engineering deliverables in collaboration with other leaders in the domain.

• Overseeing the technical quality of work produced by the team, including architecture, system design, and development best practices.

About you

To be a fit for this position, you likely have a degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field. You have several years of industry experience in Machine Learning or Data Science roles - ideally from fast-paced tech companies working with information retrieval and/or recommendation systems.

In addition, you have:

• Proven leadership experience with a collaborative leadership style and the ability to inspire and motivate team members.

• Experience in building and scaling Machine Learning systems, with proficient knowledge of cloud services, tools, and frameworks.

• Solid understanding of various ML/AI methodologies, including Information Retrieval, NLP and LLMs.

• A balanced mix of technical expertise, and deep domain knowledge with a strong focus on customer satisfaction and high-impact outcomes.

• Skilled in communication to partner with stakeholders effectively.

• Adaptability and agility in responding to changing business needs and technological advancements.

• Ability to balance best practices and practical solutions to match different problems and situations.
