Software Engineer
At Storytel, we believe that powerful stories add an extra dimension to life. Storytel is one of the world's leading audiobook and ebook streaming services, and we offer unlimited listening to consumers in 25 markets. Our vision is to make the world more empathetic with great stories to be shared and enjoyed by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
We are now looking for a Software Engineer with a data engineering focus to join our team.
About the team and the domain
The Creator Services Team is part of the Content Services domain - the backbone of Storytel. We develop and maintain core systems and platforms related to processing user consumption data, calculating royalty reports, and managing payouts to publishers. We also build internal tools to support our business and maintain a publisher portal that provides publishers with financial, consumption, and royalty reports, as well as tools for media and metadata uploads.
We are currently refactoring parts of our architecture to stay ahead with modern technologies and improve our systems' scalability and robustness. The team consists of five Software Engineers with a diverse set of knowledge and backgrounds.
About the role
We want to strengthen the team with a Software Engineer with experience and interest in the data engineering domain. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain software solutions that handle large volumes of data. You will work with cutting-edge technologies alongside both experienced and junior colleagues. You will contribute to our modernization journey while maintaining existing platforms, and your expertise will be valuable in mentoring junior engineers.
Responsibilities
Develop scalable software applications and microservices using Java (and possibly C#, Go, or Kotlin), deployed on Kubernetes within Google Cloud Platform.
Build and maintain data pipelines with tools like Apache Beam, Google Cloud Dataflow, and BigQuery.
Implement asynchronous processing and messaging using Google Pub/Sub or similar technologies for application and data integration.
Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable, maintainable solutions.
Refactor and modernize architecture to enhance system scalability and robustness.
Mentor junior engineers, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Helping develop the team in collaborative ways of working
About you
To be a fit for the role, we believe you have the following qualifications:
Strong software engineering experience with proficiency in Java; experience with C#, Go, or Kotlin is a plus.
Experience in data engineering, particularly in processing large data volumes using tools like Apache Beam, Google Cloud Dataflow, and BigQuery.
Proficient in SQL and data modeling in relational and data warehousing contexts.
Familiarity with asynchronous processing and message queues, such as Google Pub/Sub.
Experience deploying microservices in cloud environments using Kubernetes on Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure.
Solid understanding of system design, data structures, and software engineering principles.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication.
Passionate about building high-quality products with a focus on user experience.
Experience mentoring others and fostering team growth.
Committed to iterative development and optimizing time-to-value.
But most importantly, we believe that the right mindset and attitude are more valuable than ticking all the technical boxes, so if you feel that this could be the right job and environment for you to learn in and develop yourself, alongside others in the team, do not hesitate to get in touch with us!
